Where to stay when learning English
If you have a sponsor, relatives, friends or an organization that is already willing to help you find a place to stay then this may not be as much of a problem, but if you do not have anyone helping you, there are still some things you can do. First, be aware that in order to gain the needed points to come on a student visa, you have to be able to prove that you have enough money to cover the cost of not just your classes but your monthly living costs or maintenance as well. The UK Border agency website tells about how much you will need. Online, you can go the website of the International Student Exchange and Study Abroad Rescue Center (at www.internationalstudent.com) and link to information for students studying in the UK (uk.internationalstudent.com). Included is a link to a section called finding a student House.
There are links to a site run by students (LiveOut.co.uk), one giving information on how to find a landlord, as well as other useful links. Also, read the websites of the schools that you are considering attending. There may be a housing service that can give you some advise. If you have been accepted, you can ask if your school has a list of landlord's houses they recommend or those that they do not advise that someone use. School websites may also have an office for the support of international students that can give you helpful information on the school, available classes on how to learn English, scholarship programs, financial aid and other resources.
